Around the Counties ,
the latest release by The Black Velvet Band
Around the Counties , our fourth musical collection, includes two new, original songs written by the band. Granuaille (pronounced Gran-na-yeh), by Tim Quinn, tells the story of the 15th century Irish pirate Grace OMalley, who was a fierce warrior but benevolent tribal leader in western Ireland. Tim the Mechanic is a whimsical salute to the local auto mechanic of our band founder, the late Bart Lee, who can fix, well, just about anything. Other songs covered on the CD are tales of Irish life such as The Ferryman (sung by Tim), Tom's light-hearted version of Whiskey on a Sunday , and two of Paul's favorite songs, My Donegal (The Lights of London) and Come Back Paddy Reilly .
Tim performs powerful interpretations of The Town I Love So Well , a sorrowful look at the continuing political troubles in Northern Ireland, and the sad love song Long Before Your Time , while Paul counters with a humorous rendition of The Scotsman . Also included are a medley of classic waltzes from different counties in Ireland, which provided the title of the CD, the bands theme song, The Black Velvet Band , and the timeless Danny Boy . Rounding out the CD are two American medleys from the 1950s: Tim's mix of songs by Bobby Darin, the Drifters and Ben E. King, and Paul's toe-tapping tunes from Marty Robbins and Gail Davies.
